2014-12-03 · Sergei Mironovich Kirov was born in 1886 in Urzhum, in central Russia. Drawn to revolutionary politics, Kirov participated in the 1905 Russian Revolution against the czar's regime. He joined Vladimir Lenin's movement in the wake of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, and took part in Russia's civil war as anti-Bolshevik elements attempted to overthrow the burgeoning communist regime.

As a result of this, Ordzhonikidze was unable to travel to Leningrad for the funeral of Sergei Kirov, who had been assassinated on 1 December.
